Larry has worked with exhibits in the museum/science center environment for more than 25 years. In that time, he has successfully installed nearly 100 exhibitions—permanent and traveling, large and small. He has had experience with a wide range of exhibit types from highly interactive to object based and become sensitive to operational issues including program requirements, exhibit maintenance, visitor circulation, amenities, conservation and security.
Larry began his museum exhibit career as an exhibit designer at the Franklin Institute in Philadelphia known for its long-time involvement in interactive exhibit techniques. He left the museum field for several years to pursue other interests including 3 years as a partner in a Connecticut residential design and build company specializing in energy efficient and passive solar construction. He then returned to Philadelphia as Director of Exhibits at the Academy of Natural History where he served as exhibit designer as well as manager. Larry moved to southeast Michigan in 1987 to become Curator of Exhibits at Cranbrook Institute of Sciences.
While there, he developed interactive exhibits bridging the natural and physical sciences. In 2000, he was invited to become Director of Exhibits at the Detroit ScienceCenter as a major building expansion got underway.
The project was notable for employing a modular system for interactive exhibits allowing ongoing flexibility on the floor. He left in 2003 to launch Hutchinson Studios.
During his tenure on staff, Larry was engaged in a wide range of exhibit-related activities - from turning out exhibit components in the workshop to managing contractors and project budgets of $8M. His understanding of the challenges faced by organizations in planning, operating and maintaining exhibits enables him to effectively interact with his clients in developing exhibit projects that "work."
Larry received a BA in architecture from Washington University in St. Louis. He continues to think of exhibit design as environmental design with a purpose of both presenting information and of creating comfortable environments that facilitate appropriate visitor behavior.
