Lyons’ Country Store
Ann Arbor Hands-On Museum
Ann Arbor, Michigan
The Lyon’s Country Store is a long-time favorite for visitors to the museum. As with many loved exhibits, staff felt that it was time to enhance the experience. After much discussion, the museum set course for the development of a “Pepper’s ghost” experience.
“Pepper’s ghost” refers to an 18th century technique that combines light and reflecting glass to superimpose two three-dimensional spaces. The technique was translated into the Lyon’s store by creating a stage set of an annex to the store complete with counters and merchandise from the 30s time period. A ghostly figure of several characters was introduced to the space by means of mirrors, controlled lighting, and video of actors. Though very difficult to describe with words and photographs, the engaged amazement of visitors is testimony to its effectiveness.
Hutchinson Studios provided exhibit development, design, installation and project management services for the project.
