Women Dentists: Changing the Face of Dentistry

Sindecuse Museum of Dentistry
University of Michigan

Ann Arbor, Michigan

The Sindecuse Museum of Dentistry began a series of temporary exhibits in its fifty-five lineal feet of wall cases in its atrium area with this topical exhibit. The story is told through the voices of women dentists from the late 1800s through the present. Much of the material is two-dimensional images and text—the exhibit team was challenged to find a way to give the presentation visual interest and dimensionality.

The solution was found through a zoning approach—graphics on the back wall, a stream of artifacts in the middle ground, and a reading rail in the foreground. The lighting was upgraded to an efficient LED system providing the control required to properly illuminate the exhibit.

Hutchinson Studios provided exhibit design, project management, and installation services.
