Great Lakes Discovery

Ann Arbor Hands-On Museum & National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration (NOAA)
Ann Arbor, Michigan

The Ann Arbor Hands-On Museum and NOAA partnered to design and build a 400 square-foot traveling exhibition highlighting key points about the Great Lakes system including its watershed, living things, and its effect on humans.

The central feature is a “projection table” on which animations exploring Great Lakes facts are shown. Collages of changing images are displayed on the end walls showing shipwrecks, life in the lakes and exploration and recreational uses.

A microscope provides visitors an opportunity to look at microscope slides of organisms found in the lakes. A display case includes objects used by researchers as they explore the lakes. The exhibit is set against a backdrop of large bathymetric maps produced by NOAA which are given a 3D appearance when seen through a special hand-held viewer.

Hutchinson Studios provided design and project management services.
